Light Up Your Mind: The Mental Mechanics of Attention, Focus, and Concentration
THE MIND SPECTRUM

Illuminating Clarity, Precision & Power
When it comes to Leadership (or our work in general), there are aspects of our mind that really help us get the most out of our time. As well as the quality of our work.
In this blog, we will discuss each element of these mental aspects and explain what they are and their relevance to a leader.
How by the way and frequency of use of these abilities can keep the leaders mind sharp and ready.
ILLUMINATING WHAT MATTERS

Directing Your Mental Spotlight
The first aspect we will talk about is 'Attention'.
The definition of attention is:
[In psychology] The concentration of awareness on some phenomenon to the exclusion of other stimuli. - Britannica Dictionary
In more simple terms, it means placing our awareness on one object to the exclusion of anything else in the environment.
If we were to use the metaphor of a light. This could be akin to a spotlight.
What a spotlight does is highlight or illuminate what it is shining on and keeps everything outside that spotlight in the dark.
This means you can only see what is within the spotlight.
This means strengthening this ability prevents distractions from hampering our progress.
It means our complete mental processes are working solely upon what we are placing our attention on.
This allows our mind to work more clearly and more efficiently, without interruption. Interruption causes slow down and a slow start back up.
So keeping our mind on what is being highlighted is an optimised way of producing high quality output.
Let's discuss this in the next section.
LASER PRECISION

The Art Of Singular Mental Targeting
If a leader cannot even place their attention on something for a sustained amount of time, then it makes it harder to focus.
Focus is what attention enables the leader to do.
Within that spotlight, they may want to focus on something in particular.
That is, to hone in on it. Like a laser. Hence the term, 'laser like focus'.
The definition of focus is:
The ability to concentrate one’s attention or to sustain concentration. - Dictionary.com
It may become the focal point of their attention. To work only on that section, or to discern the finer details etc.
But suffice to say, this type of concentration is important if the leader wants to complete their work and produce high quality results.
This, of course, leads into the next part of all this.
THE ART OF POWERFUL CONCENTRATION

The Power Behind The Beam
The ability to concentrate.
The definition of concentration is:
1) The ability to think carefully about something you are doing and nothing else.
2) A lot of attention and thought directed to an activity or subject. - Cambridge Dictionary
Along with this focus, is the ability to concentrate. The amount of concentration the leader can muster, the stronger the fixation on the subject they have.
This allows the leader to work on something for longer, or to gather information more deeply.
In either case, this concentration is akin to the strength of a light source.
If the light source is weak, its like having light source appearing weak on the subject. A strong concentration shows up as a powerful beam of light.
The ability to think carefully about something is a mental aspect that a leader must develop. If they can think carefully, they can plan, strategise and learn new things.
It's this kind of ability that allows a leader to come up with ideas and solutions that can help those that they wish to help or the challenges they wish to solve.
COMMANDING THE SPECTRUM
Your Mind As A Precision Tool
The point of this topic was to highlight the different mental aspects a leader can employ to get the best out of themselves and their work.
These abilities work in conjunction together, reinforce each other, to enable the leader to create and produce high quality work or ideas. To notice or become aware of things that others might not notice.
This means opportunities can arise from seemingly nowhere. To see different perspective of things which can lead to newer understandings.
This is why it is a good idea to work on the mind and utilise these abilities as much as possible.
So that as we work, just like any good investment, we will eventually get more out of it, than we put in.
